John Vesey Kirkland (1820-1896)

Major-General (John Agmondisham) Vesey Kirkland, D.L., of Avoch, Ross-shire

He was the only son of Sir John Kirkland (1796-1871) and Augusta Elizabeth Vesey (d.1824). He was educated at Harrow and was commissioned into the Rifle Brigade in 1837. He transferred to the Coldstream Guards the following year and served in the Crimean campaign. He raised a battalion for service in the Indian Mutiny, and became a Lieutenant-Colonel. He retired with the honorary rank of Major-General in 1869 and was a member of the Royal Company of Archers. He died at Fordel, Glenfarg, Perthshire. He was married twice: (1) In 1840, to Susan Paterson of Quebec (2) In 1873, to Isabella Hay-Mackenzie of Edinburgh.
