Capt. James Lanier Jr. (1750-1806)

Planter, of Pendleton County, Kentucky

He was born in Southampton County, Virginia. His grandmother, Elizabeth (Washington) Lanier, was a great-great-granddaughter of Lawrence Washington of Sulgrave Manor, who was also the great-great-grandfather of Augustine Washington, father of President Washington. During the Revolution, Lanier served as a Captain of Cavalry in Col. William Washington's regiment. In 1789, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, before settling in Kentucky from 1791. He was married in 1774 to a Sarah Chalmers from Scotland. Two of their four children survived to adulthood: Alexander, of Madison, Indiana; and, James, a U.S. Army Surgeon (died without issue).
