Lt.-Col. James Johnston (1724-1800)

J.P., Merchant & Co-Founder of the Quebec Chamber of Commerce

He was born into a well-known family at Outbrecks in the Orkney Islands. He came to Quebec almost immediately after the British conquest in 1759. In 1776, with Charles Grant and Robert Lester, he co-founded the Quebec Chamber of Commerce along the lines of that in New York which circumnavigated the pre-existing and restrictive French laws.
