James Grant Forbes (1769-1825)

Colonel J. Grant Forbes, of New York; West India Merchant

He was born at St. Augustine, Florida, and was a grandson of James Murray, Member of the North Carolina General Assembly. He was a Loyalist and returned to England with his father in 1783. He became a West India merchant (slave trader) operating out of Port-au-Prince (Haiti) and served as an officer in the War of 1812. He is often mistakenly referred to as having been Governor of East Florida - he was not. In 1804, at New York, he married Frances, daughter of Colonel Jacob Blackwell and they are maternal grandparents of Lady Helene Leigh, of Stoneleigh Abbey.
