James Gordon Douglas (1882-1960)
J. Gordon Douglas, of 392 Madison Ave., New York & "Ocean View" Newport, R.I.
He was named for his father's notorious friend, J. Gordon Bennett, with whom his parents spent their year-long honeymoon in France. His mother later became one of J.P. Morgan's lovers. He became a stockbroker in New York with Watson & Hollins and E.F. Hutton & Co. In private, he was an avid golfer - winning the Count de Turin Cup in 1910 at the Newport Country Club - and an accomplished polo and tennis player. He was Governor of the Newport Country Club and served on the Green Committee with Robert W. Goelet. He lived at 392 Madison Avenue in New York and first rented the Whitney Warren Villa at Parker Avenue and Clay Street in Newport before buying "Ocean View". He was married three times and had two sons by his first wife.
