James Coles Bruce (1806-1865)

of Berry Hill Plantation, Halifax County; Member of the Virginia House of Delegates

He continued his father's business prowess and by 1860 he was said to have more than doubled his inheritance being worth some $4-million. His mansion - "Berry Hill" - was completed in 1844 by the same architect (John E. Johnson) who designed the altogether very different Gothic-Revival "Staunton Hill" for his brother, Charles. In 1829, he married Eliza, daughter of William Wyche Wilkins, of "Belmont" Northampton Co., North Carolina. They had 11-children of whom seven reached adulthood.
