James Coleman (1784-1831)

Owner of the Elizabeth Iron Furnace in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania

His father died in 1825 and left the Cornwall Furnace to James and his brothers William and Edward, and the ore mines were also left to the three brothers plus their younger brother, Thomas. William and Edward sold ownership of all of their iron properties to James and Thomas, with James managing the Elizabeth Furnace and Thomas managing the Cornwall Furnace. James lived in the house pictures, and added the extension on the left during his time there. When James died in 1831, Thomas became the sole owner of all the ironworks. In 1821, he married Harriet Dawson and had five children. His sons, Robert and George, inherited management of the Cornwall and Elizabeth Furnaces until 1852 when George bought out his brother, and ran them alone.
