James Bingham (1694-1737)

Merchant & Councilman of Philadelphia

He was a merchant at Morristown, Williamsport and Reading; and, a large landowner. His father-in-law, Judge William Budd, was one of New Jersey's largest landowners. On coming to Philadelphia, he was elected a Councilman in 1732 and in the following year he sold 1,000-acres of his wife's land in New Jersey. Among other landholdings, he owned 2,000-acres at Salisbury in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
