Jacob LeRoy (1794-1868)
of LeRoy House, Genesee County, New York
He was born at New York City. He attended Yale University for three years and in 1815, following the War of 1812, he joined his father's firm and sailed to India to establish new trade contracts. Returning to the States, he was a director of the Bank of New York before taking over the management of his father's land holdings around and those of the Holland Land Co. from 1823 to 1837. He lived at LeRoy House, helped build St. Mark's Church and was Warden of St. George's Church, New York. He was married twice to a pair of cousins with very similar names: In 1822, he married Charlotte Downes Otis by whom he had 7-children who lived to adulthood. After she died, in 1853 he married Charlotte Otis Downes. In 1842, his fortune was estimated at $350,000.
