Irving Grinnell (1839-1921)

Shipping Merchant, of "Netherwood" New Hamburg, New York

He bought "Netherwood" (see images) in 1863 from his brother-in-law, Gardiner G. Howland, who acquired it in 1849 from James Lenox who built the house in 1837. One of the river colony estates along Sheafe Road, it sat on a bluff above the Hudson River with a magnificent view. It passed to Grinnell's nephew, George Temple Bowdoin, who gifted it to the Children's Aid Society in the early 1960s for use as a farm school and camp for under-developed children. It is now the site of Bowdoin Park.
