He was born at St. Barnabus' Vicarage, Hull, Yorkshire, to a Polish father who had converted from Judaism and settled in England. He was educated in Hull and at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. He served as a Lieutenant in World War I and afterwards was District Commissioner and Town Magistrate of Lamu, Kenya.
