Hugh Roberts (1706-1786)

of "Pine Grove" near Philadelphia; Merchant & Member of the Pennsylvania Assembly

He was a son and brother-in-law of two Mayors of Philadelphia. He was a close friend and working associate of Benjamin Franklin with whom he was a co-founder of the Library Company of Philadelphia, Franklin's Junto, and the Pennsylvania Hospital of which he was treasurer. The mansion (pictured) he built (1743) at Bridesburg once stood back from Point Road (now Richmond Street) near present-day Lefevre Street.
