Hugh Auchincloss (1817-1890)
Hugh Auchincloss, Merchant, of J. & H. Auchincloss, New York City
He was born at New York and joined his Scottish-born father's mercantile company which became known as J & H Auchincloss or Auchincloss Brothers. The firm rose to prominence as the agents for Coats' spool thread which they imported and sold in vast quantities. They also manufactured thread in New York and were well-known in the mercantile community. He was a director of the Merchant's National Bank, The Bleecker Street Savings Bank. He married and was the father of one daughter, Mary, who married Lewis P. Childs, of New Canaan, Connecticut.
