Henry Ware Eliot (1843-1919)
President of the Hydraulic-Press Brick Company, St. Louis, Missouri
He was born to Boston Brahmin parents in St. Louis, Missouri, where his father co-founded Washington University from where he graduated in 1863. Remaining in St. Louis, he went into business as a partner in a wholesale grocers and then in a chemical manufacturing firm before becoming associated with the Hydraulic-Press Brick Company of which he eventually became president. He was on the Board of Directors for Washington University; Trustee of the Missouri Botanical Gardens; and, President of the St. Louis Academy of Science. He was also interested in genealogy and compiled a book of all the descendants of his great-great-grandfather, William Greenleaf, Sheriff of Suffolk County, Massachusetts. In 1888, at Lexington, Massachusetts, he married Charlotte, daughter of Thomas and Charlotte (Blood) Stearns. They were the parents of seven children including "one of the 20th Century's greatest poets," T.S. Eliot.
