Henry Thompson (1774-1837)

of "Clifton" Baltimore, Maryland; Captain in the Baltimore Light Dragoons

In 1803, he completed "Clifton," a two-story brick plantation house on 166-acres outside Baltimore. In 1838, the year after his death, his heirs sold it at auction for $16,000. The buyer was Baltimore's most famous philanthropist, Johns Hopkins, who transformed it into the Italianate villa still seen today (see images).
