Henry Theodore Dortic (1826-1900)

of 138 Ave. des Champs Elysées, Paris; "Distinguished Collector" of Antique Furniture

He was born in Augusta, Georgia, where he became a successful banker and broker. After the Civil War, Henry T. Dortic retired and joined "the artistic coterie of Americans in Paris". He lived in his 'petit château' on the Champs Elysées and, "had the rare luck to begin collecting when it was possible to pick up fine things at moderate prices". He gradually filled his home with a vast collection of furniture, art and objets d'art dating principally from the 9th to the 18th century. After he died, his collection was displayed by the American Art Association and sold at auction in 1923.
