Henry Pomeroy Davison (1867-1922)

D.S.M., Senior Partner at J.P. Morgan & Chairman of the American Red Cross in WWI

He was born in Troy, Pennsylvania, where his uncle ran a bank. At the Graylock School in South Williamstown, Massachusetts, he was a classmate of Charles H. Sabin, later Chairman of the Guaranty Trust Company. On leaving, he became a teller at the Pequonnoc Bank in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He came to the Astor Place Bank in New York in 1891, gaining a valuable knowledge of the publishing world that would later serve him well, financing properties that were close to the heart of J.P. Morgan. When the Astor Bank merged with the Liberty Bank in 1894, Davison was appointed its cashier. He was the organizer of the Bankers' Trust and in 1902 George F. Baker, President of the First National Bank, brought him in as his first Vice-President.

During the Panic of 1907, he worked with Morgan partner George W. Perkins and he was admitted as a partner of J.P. Morgan & Company in 1909. He played a key role in merging three trust companies into the Guaranty Trust Company and was Chairman of the War Council of the American Red Cross. He was a Director of the Astor Trust Company, the Bankers Trust Company, Chemical National Bank, Liberty National, the First National Bank, the First Security Company, and a member of the Jekyl Island Club. In 1893, he married Kate Trubee of Bridgeport, Connecticut, and they had four children (listed). They built and lived between (see images) 690 Park Avenue in New York City (presently the Italian Embassy) and "Peacock Point" at Lattingtown overlooking Long Island Sound.
