Henry D. Cruger (1800-1867)

Henry Nicholas/Douglas Cruger, Attorney, of Charleston & New York City

He was born Henry Nicholas Cruger in St. Croix and was brought up in South Carolina before graduating from Columbia College in New York. He was a close friend of the Cooper family, notably James Fenimore Cooper, who in his last novel, The Ways of the Hour (1850), based the character Mary Monson on Cruger's wife, Harriet Douglas, who he divorced in the same year. His wife made him agree to several conditions if they were to get married, including that they use her name rather than his. He did no agree, but compromised by taking the name Henry D. (for Douglas) Cruger.
