Henry Maunsell Schieffelin (1808-1890)
H. Maunsell Schieffelin, of 665 Fifth Avenue & "Ashton" Yonkers, New York
He was a partner in the successful wholesale druggists of W.H. Schieffelin & Fowler, started by his grandfather, Jacob Schieffelin. He was "a man of large benevolence and especially interested in the advancement of negroes". He had been Consul-General in Liberia and was a founding member and President of the New York Colonization Society who financed a mission to explore the interior of Liberia. He supported recruiting African-American students to enroll at Liberia College and encouraged emigration. He lived at 665 Fifth Avenue, a five story house in Manhattan, and kept a country home "Ashton" in Yonkers, New York. He died at Alexandria, Egypt, where he had gone for the benefit of his health, and was survived by one of his four children.
