He studied law at the Inner Temple, London. His wife was the niece of Lord Sydenham, Governor-General of Canada. He was a first cousin of Lady Marguerite (Mackenzie) Allan, wife of Sir Montagu Allan. They were the parents of three sons, two of whom were killed in action.
