Henry Ferdinand Oelrichs (1810-1875)

German Shipping Merchant of Baltimore & New York City

He was born Heinrich Oelrichs in Bremen, Germany. He came to Baltimore circa 1830 and in 1839 went into the shipping business with his first cousin Gustav Wilhelm Lurman. Their friendship and partnership came to an abrupt end in 1861 when Oelrichs resigned on account of Lurman's unswerving support for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Moving to New York, Henry created Oelrichs & Co., shipping merchants and wool importers, with his brother, Edwin, and Gustav Schwab.
