Henry Effingham Lawrence (1829-1890)
Dry Goods Merchant, of 57 East 25th St., New York City & "Cliffside" Snedens Landing
He purchased a mile of Hudson River waterfront at Snedens Landing and in 1876 he built "Cliffside" (see images) that still stands today. It was designed by J. Cleveland Cady , who also designed the old Metropolitan Opera House. The house had 23-rooms, a pipe organ, and contained Henry's collection of Hudson River School paintings. In the gardens, he planted imported Ginkgo and Paulownia trees.
