Henry Croker (1756-1836)

Major Henry Croker, J.P., of Quartertown House, Co. Cork

He was born at Ballynagarde House, Co. Limerick, the fifth son of John Croker (1720-1804), High Sheriff of Co. Limerick. After he died in 1836, he was described as, "one of the last surviving officers who fought in the battles of the first American war and one of the oldest Captains of the army - having obtained that rank in 1779. He was appointed to the situation of Brigade Major of Yeomanry in the year 1798 which he held for thirty years and was also an old and upright Magistrate of the county Cork". Through his wife, he inherited Quartertown House and its estate of some 3,000-acres. He was the grandfather of New York's infamous gang leader, "Boss Croker".
