Henry Bentivoglio Van Ness Middleton (b.1843)

"Benti" Middleton, Confederate Officer & Officer at the Court of the King of Italy

He was born at Charleston, South Carolina, and was educated in Paris and at the South Carolina Military Academy. He fought for the Confederate Army during the U.S. Civil War. He served with the Marion Artillery, the Signal Corps C.S.A. at Charleston, and with Hagood's Battalion in Virginia. After the War, he left America for Rome in Italy in 1866 and was appointed a Captain of the Papal Zouaves and an Officer at the Court of the King of Italy. In 1869, he married Beatrice, Countess Cini, daughter of Count Cini, and grand-niece of Pope Leo XIII. They had three daughters and one son.
