Rev. Dr. Henry Barclay (1712-1764)

D.D., Rector of Trinity Church, New York City

He was born at Albany, New York, and graduated from Yale College (1734). In 1735, he was appointed Catechist (teacher) to the Mohawk Indians and two years later he was sent to England by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel where he was ordained by the Bishop of London circa 1738. Returning to Albany, he was appointed Rector of St. Peter's. In 1746, he was appointed Rector of Trinity Church in New York City and in 1761 he received his Doctorate of Divinity from the University of Oxford. In 1749, he married Mary, daughter of Anthony Rutgers, Brewer, of New York City. They were the parents of five children, four of whom (listed) survived to adulthood.
