Helene (Beckwith) Leigh (1847-1909)

Frances "Helene" Forbes (Beckwith), 3rd Lady Leigh of Stoneleigh Abbey

She was brought up in New York City, Hong Kong, and Paris where she was considered a favorite at the court of Napoleon III and at the Tuileries and St. Cloud. Empress Eugenie referred to her fondly as "Bébé" Beckwith, a nickname by which she was known throughout adulthood. When her father died in 1889, she inherited $750,000 and was living with Bradley Martin and his family on their highland estate in Scotland after her engagement to Francis Leigh (afterwards 3rd Baron Leigh) a childhood friend of the Earl of Craven who was married to her friend, Cornelia Martin. They were married in 1890 at St. George's on Hanover Square in London, and the marriage settlement stipulated that she would give her husband £2,000 a month until he became Lord Leigh when that amount would be halved. She died without children at Stoneleigh Abbey (where she installed its first bathroom), leaving £231,642 to her husband.
