Harvey Childs Jr. (1848-1917)

of 915 Ridge Avenue, Pittsburgh

He was a trustee of what was then known as Western University of Pennsylvania and he played a key role in establishing the Allegheny Observatory, contributing significantly to the university’s Department of Astronomy. In 1896, he commissioned the noted architectural firm of  Peabody & Stearns to build his new home in the Colonial-Revival style. Now known as "The Harvey Childs House" (see images) it serves as the official residence of the University of Pittsburgh’s chancellor.
