Harry Beverley (d.1730)

Capt. Harry Beverley, J.P., of "Newlands" Spotsylvania Co., Virginia

He was born in Middlesex Co., Virginia. He was appointed a magistrate (1702),  Surveyor of King & Queen and King William Counties (1702-1714), and from 1720 was presiding Justice of the County Court for Spotsylvania. In 1716, he captained the sloop "The Virgin" which sailed to the Bahamas under the flag of the Colony of Virginia in search of pirates and Spanish treasure. The ship was captured by the Spanish and he was held captive at Vera Cruz for several months before he managed to escape. By the time he died, he had succeeded in amassing an estate of some 32,000-acres across several counties. In about 1696, he married Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Smith, of "Brandon" Middlesex County (son of Major-General Robert Smith, Commander of the King's Army in Virginia), and died at his plantation, "Newlands".
