Harrison Loring (1822-1907)

Shipbuilder & Owner of the City Point Works, South Boston, Massachusetts

He was born at Duxbury, Massachusetts. In 1847, he built a machine/boiler shop in South Boston and ten years later established the City Point Works, one of the first shipyards in the States entirely devoted to the construction of iron steamships, engines, and boilers. He also ran steamers to the West Indies, and at one time owned a steamship line between Boston and Halifax. In 1865, he built the house at 789 East Broadway in South Boston that still stands today and for a period he was President of the Boston Towboat Company. His three sons took over the firm but ran into financial difficulties and the yard - as well as the family home - was sold at auction in 1894.
