Harris Charles Fahnestock (1835-1914)
of 457 Madison Avenue, N.Y.C., Vice-President of the First National Bank of New York
He was born in Harrisburg Pennsylvania and at a young age started work with his uncle's bank. In 1862, his success led to him being invited to become a partner with Jay Cooke & Co. in Washington D.C., working with the Treasury Department and eventually becoming a financial advisor to President Lincoln. After the firm went bankrupt in the 1870s, he became Vice-President of the First National Bank of New York, remaining there for the next 40-years. In 1881, he co-founded the investment firm of Fahnestock & Co. with his son William which coupled savvy investments in the railroads and several significant directorships made Fahnestock a very wealthy man.
