Godfrey William Rhodes (1850-1932)

He was born and grew up at "Benmore" (see images) off the Chemin Saint-Louis in Sillery, Quebec. Through his mother, he was a great-grandson of Thomas Dunn, Lieutenant-Governor of Lower Canada. From 1880, he pursued a career in the United States where for 25-years he worked for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad under Charles Elliott Perkins. From 1888, he was the railroads's highly respected Superintendent of Motive Power and Machinery, and in 1899 he was appointed Assistant Superintendent-General of the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad.

In 1904, the CBQ lines west of the Missouri river were divided into two districts and he was appointed General Superintendent of the Wyoming District in which position he retired the following year. He was President of the Western Railway Club; an honorary member of the St. Louis Railway Club; and, one of the most active members of the American Railway Master Mechanic's Association and the Master Car Builder's Association. On retiring in 1905, he returned to Quebec and bought Cataraqui where he lived for the remainder of his life except for six years (1909 to 1915) when he and his wife based themselves in England and travelled extensively throughout Europe.
