Gertrude (Uhlhorn) Lorillard (b.1847)

Mrs Gertrude Verplanck (Uhlhorn) Huyshe, Lorillard

She was the daughter of the Governor of the Windward Islands. In 1869, at New York, she married her first husband, Wentworth Huyshe, the erratic son of a British Major-General who was invariably a journalist, historian, translator, designer, composer and actor, with a passion for all things medieval. Their only child died in infancy. They lived in England but divorced in the 1880s when she returned to New York. In 1897, she married her second husband, the rather more dependable popular and prominent member of international society, Jake Lorillard, co-founder of Tuxedo Park in New York. From 1901, they returned to England and lived at 4 Upper Brook St., London.
