Capt. George Wetmore (1751-1800)

Loyalist, of Wetmore Island, Nova Scotia & Morristown, New Jersey

He was born and educated at Middletown, Connecticut. He entered the West India Trade and "amassed considerable property". On the outbreak of Revolution, he remained Loyal to the Crown and he enlisted a company of 48-men at his own expense, the "Independent Volunteers" which was attached to Brigadier-General Browne's Brigade. He served until 1783 when the regiment was disbanded and was granted 800-acres in Nova Scotia and lived at Wetmore Island on the Penobscot which belonged to his relation, Judge Wetmore. They returned to new York in 1798 and he died two years later at Morristown, New Jersey. His daughter Harriet married James Colles, of New York.
