George Washington Bassett (1800-1878)
of "Clover Lea" Hanover Co., Virginia & "Eltham" New Kent Co., Virginia
He was named for his grandfather's friend and brother-in-law, George Washington. He was educated at Princeton University but after the death of his uncle, Burwell Bassett, he was called home to manage "Eltham" (New Kent Co.)- built by his ancestors from 1660. He was married in 1826 and made his home at "Lansdowne" (Spotsylvania Co.) before completing "Clover Lea" (Hanover Co.) in 1844.
