He gained his nickname for rigging his scales to overweigh his passenger's luggage by 40% and paid his men between $30 and $35 a week His business was referred to as "an abuse" and "an orphan could get a customized name in New York, and One-Eyed Daley's ticket for Detroit could end him in Albany forever".
