George Vernon Housman (1820-1887)

Rev. George Vernon Housman, Rector of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Quebec

He was born in Guernsey and graduated from Cambridge University before being ordained as a Deacon in 1844. After holding various clerical positions in England he was posted to Canada as Rector of the English Cathedral, Quebec, a position he held for 25-years. He was the uncle and first cousin once removed of the famous poet A.E. Housman (1859-1936). He was given his middle name for his maternal grandfather, Thomas Shrawley Vernon (1759-1825), of Shrawley and Hanbury Hall, High Sheriff of Worcestershire. Hanbury Hall had been in the Vernon family since 1594 and Thomas inherited Hanbury on the death of his cousin, Emma Vernon, ex-wife of the 10th Earl of Exeter. George Housman was married twice: (1) Eliza, daughter of Charles Reeves of 102 Guildford Street off Russell Square, London, and (2) Louisa Aylmer Bowen, daughter of The Hon. Edward Bowen, Chief Justice of the Superior Court of the Province of Quebec.
