George Thomas d'Aguilar (1783-1839)

Lt.-Colonel George Thomas d'Aguilar, H.E.I.C.S., of the Bengal Army, Calcutta

He was born in Marylebone, London, one of the many grandsons of the Jewish Portuguese banker Diego Lópes Pereira d'Aguilar (1699-1759), Baron of the Holy Roman Empire (1726) and a Privy Councillor to Maria Theresa responsible for building the imperial palace at Schönbrunn. George was a first cousin of Lt.-General Sir George Charles d'Aguilar, Lieutenant-Governor of Hong Kong. He came to Calcutta in 1790 and in 1799 was commissioned an Ensign in the Bengal Army. He retired with the rank Lt.-Colonel and in 1836 gave his address as, "Bhaugulpore in the Province of Bengal." He and his wife had 20-children of whom at least eight survived to adulthood.
