George Simpson Smith (1822-1897)

George S. Smith, of Evanston, Illinois

He was born at Old Deer, Aberdeenshire, son of John and Christian (Patterson) Smith. In 1843, he came out to to Lake County, Illinois, and bought a farm a mile north of Milburn. He married Beatrice Yule in 1845. He moved to Evanston in about 1893. He was a cousin of George "Chicago" Smith who left $44 million of his $52 million fortune to be divided equally between George's son, James "Silent" Smith, and the husband of his second  daughter (Mary), Sir George Cooper.
