George Henry Philips (1831-1886)

George H. Philips J.P., D.L., of Abbey Cwmhir Hall, High Sheriff of Radnorshire

He was educated at Eton and Christ College, Oxford. He succeeded to Abbey Cwmhir Hall on the death of his father in 1859 and was appointed High Sheriff of Radnorshire the following year. He doubled the size of the hall to 52-rooms and gave it its present Victorian-Gothic appearance. He married Anne Prescot whose sister married his brother, Francis, of Lee Priory in Kent. They had six children.

He was a first class cricketer playing both for Oxford and then the MCC. Two of his sons Charles and John where distinguished oarsmen. Both were Henley Winners. Charles won the Boatrace four times, the Grand twice and also the Goblets.
