George Hearst (1764-1822)
George Hearst, of Meramec Township, Franklin Co., Missouri
He was born in Northern Ireland to a Protestant family. His father brought the family to the States and in 1766 settled at Long Canes in Abbeville County, South Carolina. George was a younger brother of Major John Hearst (d.1808) who it would seem fought for the Continental Army during the Revolution. George left South Carolina for Missouri via Illinois to join another brother, Thomas, who'd already settled there. When George died, he was recognized as one of the wealthiest men in Meramec Township, Franklin County. He owned 19 of Meramec's 41-slaves. He was married twice and had 5-children by his first wife, and a daughter by his second. He was grandfather of Senator George Hearst and great-grandfather of William Randolph Hearst.
