George Hamilton (1781-1839)

Lt.-Colonel George Hamilton, of Hawkesbury, Upper Canada

He was born at "Hamwood" in County Meath and was a first cousin of Sir John Caldwell 6th Bt., who lived in style at Caldwell Manor, Quebec. George and his brother, William, came to Upper Canada where they established a lumber mill at Hawkesbury. They quickly became one of the three leading deal exporters in Canada. The business was continued by his son, George, who in 1855 was turning out 20-million board feet of pine a year. He married Susannah, daughter of The Hon. John Craigie, of Quebec, by his wife Susannah, daughter of John Coffin, a Loyalist from Boston.
