George Gregory (1797-1850)

He was brought up at "Woodland," his father's manor outside Montreal. In 1816, he was commissioned as a Cornet into the 19th Light Dragoons, joining at least one brother (William) in the same regiment. He retired from the Dragoons with the rank of Captain on his appointment as Commanding Officer of the Royal Montreal Cavalry with the rank of Major, a position he held from 1820 to 1832 before being promoted Lieutenant-Colonel. In 1836, Horse Guards in London granted him 850-acres at Tring in Lower Canada (Quebec) "for services in the army". In 1823, he married Jane Prescott, daughter of the influential John Forsyth, of Montreal, and they are the presumed parents of Captain John Forsyth Gregory. By 1847, Colonel Gregory had retired to England where he died "deeply regretted" at his residence, 4 Marlborough Buildings, Bath.
