Garrit Storm (1778-1851)

Garrit Storm, Merchant & Diarist, of New York City

He was born at Fishkill in Dutchess County, New York. He joined his father's successful wholesale grocery business at 9 Coenties Slip, New York, that became known as Thomas Storm & Son. During the War of 1812 he bought a large number of U.S. securities on the cheap that he sold after 1815 for a vast profit. He lived at 2 Warren Street and when he retired his business was continued by his stepson as Cook & Murgatroyd. In 1807, he married Louisa, daughter of Isaac Gouverneur and widow of Samuel Murgatroyd. They had two children and he was a father figure to his four stepchildren. He kept a diary which inspired Jared Lobdell's book: One Man's Life in Old New York. When Storm died in 1851, he left property valued at over a million dollars.
