Frederick May (1851-1918)

He is best remembered for his part in the last duel fought on American soil when he took three shots at the legendary newspaperman Gordon Bennett. The story is written up in Bennett's biography here. May was solidly built and stood one inch over six foot. In his day, he was remembered as, "one of the best known clubmen and sportsmen of the seventies, eighties and nineties". He died unmarried at Washington D.C.
