He was born in Ireland, the youngest son of James Smith, Surgeon, of Newpark, Mountrath, Queen's Co., and his wife Maria, daughter of Joseph Pemberton (d.1817), Lord Mayor of Dublin. In 1859, he married Elizabeth, daughter of Meredith Ogden, of Montreal. He was Rector of Christ Church, New Liverpool, Quebec, and died (survived by his wife) at 423 Manse Street, Montreal. They had six children.
