Francis Burton (1784-1828)

Surgeon to the 66th Regiment of Foot

He wanted to follow a career in the church but was obliged to choose a military career. He was famous for taking the death mask of Napoleon minutes after the Emperor died on St. Helena in 1821. On returning to England, he married Sarah Baker, sister of his brother's wife, and lived with their family at Barham House. He died in 1828 and is buried at St. Nicholas' Church, Elstree. He was survived by two daughters: one died unmarried and the other, Sarah, became Mrs Pryce-Harrison.
