Elizabeth (Morris) Smith (1915-1994)

She was born in Yonkers, N.Y., and grew up between there, New York City, and Newport, R.I. She graduated from Miss Hewitt's School in New York City and became a well-known horsewoman in Virginia (a consistent winner on the Eastern and Canadian show circuits) but after thirty years there she returned to Newport and devoted herself to historic renovation and preservation work. She lived at the Francis Malbone House (pictured) at 392 Thames Street that she restored meticulously. She was President of Operation Clapboard; Vice-President of the Preservation Society of Newport County; Vice-President of the Redwood Library; and, Trustee of the Newport Art Museum, etc. After returning from Virginia, she lived between Newport and Palm Beach. She retired to 2 Barclay Square in Newport, was married three times, and had two daughters.
