Forbes Hawkes (1865-1940)
(Robert) Forbes Hawkes, M.D., Fellow of the American College of Surgeons
He was born in New York City and he was a great-grandson of both U.S. Senator & Judge Advocate-General John Laurance and Joel Root, Author of "A Voyage Around the World". He was educated in Europe at Tours and Paris in France and Marburg in Germany before graduating from Yale University (1887) and the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons (1891). He continued his medical studies for one more year in Vienna and Edinburgh before returning to America as an intern with the New York Presbyterian Hospital, specializing in gynaecology and abdominal surgery.
At the Presbyterian Hospital, he became head of the dispensary and a consulting surgeon not only there but at the Loomis Sanitarium, the North-Western Dispensary and several other institutions. He authored many papers and was appointed Professor of Clinical Surgery at the Post-Graduate Hospital (today's New York University School of Medicine); a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons; and, a Member of the New York Surgical Society, the American Urological Association, the New York Academy of Medicine, the Hospital Graduate Association, and the Presbyterian Hospital Alumni Association.
In 1905, he married his cousin Alice, daughter of William Richardson Belknap, of Louisville, Kentucky, President of the Belknap Hardware & Manufacturing Company. Alice was a Suffragette, Director of the Fairchild Tropical Garden in Florida, and a great-granddaughter of Benjamin Silliman, Founder of the "American Journal of Science" and a great-x2 granddaughter of Jonathan Trumbull, 20th Governor of Connecticut. They lived between 124 East 65th Street in New York City and "Briar Patch" at Sands Point (East Hamptons), Long Island. They were the parents of two surviving children (listed).
