Florence Dumaresq Boit (1868-1919)

Florence Boit, of Boston, Massachusetts

She was born at Boston and grew up predominantly in France and Italy where her father was an artist. She is immortalized in John Singer Sargent's famous painting on display at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston: The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit (1882), where she is seen leaning against the vase. In adulthood, she spurned men and society, and the fact that none of her sisters married and all were considered 'eccentric' is perhaps answered in the biography of their 'scary' father. Florence did however enjoy golf and she was one of those to introduce the new sport to Boston as well as being instrumental in persuading T. Suffern Tailer to build a course at Newport. She lived in Boston with her also unmarried cousin and close friend 'Pat' Jane Boit Patten.
