Ellis Gray (1746-1781)

Ellis Gray, of Boston, Massachusetts

He was the son of the Rev. Ellis Gray, Minister of the New Brick Church, Boston, and his wife, Sarah Tyler. He was a nephew of Harrison Gray, Treasurer of the Province of Massachusetts, and a first cousin of Mrs Elizabeth (Gray) Otis. He was a merchant and a shopkeeper and owned at least one slave, a carriage, and land in Leominster. He was a representative of the General Court of Massachusetts, but refused a position on the Board of War. He married Sarah Dolbeare, grand-daughter of John Dolbeare and had six children including Lucy who married William Payne brother of Mrs Gore who built Gore Place, and, Hannah, wife of U.S. Founding Father, James Wilson.
